Best Generative AI models for multilingual reasoning in 2024: Llama 3.1 70B vs Gemini 1.5 Pro vs Claude 3.5 vs GPT-4o vs Qwen 2.5

1. Introduction

In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful tools for various natural language processing tasks, leading to increasing adoption in diverse applications, including customer service and online marketing.

One particularly promising application is in automating responses to user inquiries on company pages across multiple platforms. This task presents a significant challenge as it requires understanding diverse questions, potentially in multiple languages, and generating accurate and informative responses. Manually addressing these inquiries can be resource-intensive, highlighting the need for efficient and effective automated solutions.

However, the effectiveness of LLMs in this context can vary significantly depending on their ability to handle multilingualism and complex reasoning. Different LLMs may exhibit varying strengths and weaknesses in understanding user demands, generating appropriate responses, and subtly conveying the company’s information.

This blog aims to provide valuable insights into the capabilities of LLMs for automating responses to user inquiries in a multilingual context. Our findings will be beneficial for businesses seeking to leverage LLMs for efficient and effective customer interaction on their online platforms.

2. Related work

Recent research has demonstrated that Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit remarkable performance across various natural language processing tasks, even rivaling or surpassing human capabilities in certain domains (Brown et al., 2020; Radford et al., 2019). However, the accuracy and robustness of LLMs in real-world scenarios, particularly in specialized domains like industry and medicine, remain an open question.

In the medical domain, Zhu et al. (2024) demonstrated a significant performance gap between Chinese and Western-developed LLMs when answering questions related to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Their study revealed that Chinese LLMs achieved an average accuracy of 78.4% on the TCM medical licensing examination, while Western LLMs only reached 35.9%. This result highlights the impact of language and cultural bias on LLM performance, especially in domains requiring specialized knowledge and cultural understanding. For instance, Qwen-max (Alibaba), a Chinese LLM, achieved the highest accuracy of 86.4% while all Western models failed to meet the passing threshold of 60% accuracy. This suggests that LLMs trained predominantly on English data may struggle to understand and apply domain-specific concepts from different cultures and languages. [1]

In the industrial domain, Li et al. (2024) conducted a comprehensive empirical study on the accuracy and robustness of LLMs in Chinese industrial scenarios, using 1200 domain-specific problems from 8 different industrial sectors. They found that the accuracy of all evaluated LLMs, including GPT-3.5, remained insufficient (below 60%) for deployment in industrial applications, with the highest accuracy reaching only 0.59 for GPT-4 and the lowest being 0.33. This study also revealed that the robustness of LLMs, assessed using a metamorphic testing framework on 13,631 questions, varied significantly across different abilities. Global LLMs exhibited higher robustness (averaging 0.76 for GPT-4) under logical-related variants, while advanced local LLMs performed better on problems related to understanding Chinese industrial terminology. [2]

Furthermore, specialized benchmarks have been developed to evaluate the reasoning capabilities of LLMs in specific domains. For example, the MGSM (Multilingual Grade School Math) benchmark from Papers With Code [3] provides a collection of grade school math problems translated into 10 languages. This benchmark allows for the assessment of LLMs’ ability to understand natural language and perform logical reasoning in a multilingual mathematical context.

These studies emphasize the importance of considering cultural and linguistic contexts when evaluating and developing LLMs. For multilingual reasoning tasks, it is crucial to assess LLM performance across different languages and domains. Furthermore, it is necessary to investigate various factors that can impact LLM robustness, such as model architecture, training data, and fine-tuning strategies.

1你好!我是Mikaela!I am looking for recommendations on books/apps/programs on how to learn Mandarin Chinese. Our goal is to visit Taiwan in about 6 years and I would like to be able to speak relatively well and understand relatively well by then!Any and all suggestions would be helpful.I understand some now and I know how to speak some now (very butchered in pronouncing) but can
2Hi! Do you have any app recommendations that I can use in studying Chinese? I also learned that I can’t seem to really learn the language if I’ll just focus on pinyin, so I planned to study both pinyin and the characters at the same time. I love reading Chinese novels (but i only read the translated ones)
3Hello everyone, please recommend me an app like Duolingo where learning chinese is free.
4What is the fastest way to learn Chinese? There’s no magic formula for instantaneous fluency in Chinese but there are strategies to expedite the learning process. Let’s try some tips that may help you learn Chinese more efficiently 1. Immerse Yourself in Chinese: The fastest way to become proficient in Chinese is to immerse yourself in an environment where only Chinese is spoken. If anyone here is a fan of Lisa Blackpink, you’ve probably heard about her journey learning Korean. Lisa was placed in an environment where everyone communicated solely in Korean. From there, she must quickly become accustomed to listening and mimicking speech patterns. Similarly, with Chinese, being exposed to an environment where only Chinese is spoken is the best way to rapidly improve your Chinese proficiency. However, not all of us have the opportunity to go to China to study Chinese. Therefore, we need to create a Chinese language environment for ourselves. Listening to Chinese music, watching Chinese movies are things you can do to immerse yourself in Chinese. Or if those aren’t your interests, try reading Chinese books, or finding a Chinese friend to chat with daily. You can find a Chinese friend right in this group or check out an app I often use called HelloTalk. This app helps connect people to support each other through conversation, such as a Chinese person wanting to learn your native language.2. Focusing on high-frequency vocabulary: High-frequency vocabulary consists of words and phrases that are commonly used in everyday communication. By prioritizing these words, you can quickly acquire language skills that are immediately applicable in real-life situations. This efficiency maximizes the return on investment for time spent studying. You can start with the simplest level of words and gradually increase the difficulty. I find vocabulary lists categorized by HSK levels, ranging from HSK 1 to HSK 6, to be a convenient resource for learning. The lower the level of a word, the more frequently we encounter and use it in daily life. To effectively memorize these vocabulary lists, I study them through flashcards integrated with illustrated images, audio, and interactive games that guide me in writing Chinese characters. These flashcards are readily available, totaling around 5000 flashcards corresponding to the vocabulary from HSK 1 to HSK 6 in my Chinese vocabulary learning app called Mochi Chinese. It also helps me memorize what I’ve learned effectively by analyzing my study history and notifying me of optimal review times through reminder notifications sent to my phone.3. Practice regularly to create a habit: Consistency is key. Set aside dedicated time each day to practice Chinese. Even short, daily practice sessions can yield significant progress over time. Thanks to Mochi Chinese’s regular review reminders, I’ve been able to maintain a streak of over 50 consecutive days of studying. Typically, after about 21 days of repeated actions, we begin to form a new habit. Now, studying Chinese vocabulary has become very natural for me. There’s no need to muster up much motivation to start each day; it’s become a habit to simply open my phone and see if there are any new words to review or to choose a new lesson to learn.Create image by Linguisticjourney.
5I need to pass HSK 3. But my Chinese is zero. Is it necessary to start my preparation from HSK1 level Chinese and so on or I can directly start my journey from HSK3 level. Tell me any free online resources where I can prepare my exam and if someone willing to learn English in return he/she will teach me Chinese.
6As a beginner learning Mandarin Chinese, there are three things that you need to know:Characters and Pinyin: Learning Chinese characters and Pinyin is the foundation of learning Mandarin. Characters are the writing system of Chinese, while Pinyin is a system for representing the pronunciation of Chinese characters. Understanding characters and Pinyin can help you accurately read and write Chinese words and sentences.Basic grammar: Learning basic grammar in Mandarin Chinese is essential. You need to master the basic sentence structures and common sentence patterns, such as affirmative sentences, negative sentences, and interrogative sentences. This can help you construct basic sentences and understand the basic language rules of Chinese.Common vocabulary and phrases: Learning some common vocabulary and phrases can help you quickly enter the Chinese language environment and start using Chinese for simple communication. For example, learning numbers, time, greetings, colors, body parts, family relationships, etc.By learning these three aspects, you can lay a solid foundation for learning Mandarin and gradually master more Chinese knowledge.
7Practice makes perfect. Iam learning to write Chinese characters now. Iam so sorry for my bad handwriting. The book I used is for beginners Chinese level. From the simplest to the most difficult characters. This book (book 1) consits of 131 characters (you can see the table of content). The book was published in Indonesia and the language used is also Indonesian, but if you’re interested to have the pdf file, I will make it and finish the English translation for you as soon as possible . Well, I just can say “NEVER STOP LEARNING AND NEVER GIVE UP”.

9Hello, I’m an intermediate learner.I found that most of the teaching apps like Doulingo and Memrise are teaching words and solid expressions and they were really helpful in the pronunciation and vocab. But I still struggle in listening and building phrases on my own and breakdown complex grammer phrases or advanced tenses structures.I’m wondering if there is any app that will help me tackle this issues. ( It’s ok if it’s paid )

3.2 Prompt Design

After we have the dataset, we need to design a prompt that allows the models to understand the requirements we set so that we can receive very good responses. In our view, a very good response should meet the following criteria:

  • It must be relevant to the post.
  • It should answer in the most natural way.
  • It should be polite when mentioning the company’s website and Facebook page.
  • The response should be limited to 100-150 words.

3.3 Access Method

In order to test on the models, we need to have the API keys for those models. However, some models require us to pay for their use, which is why we can also perform tests directly in the browser.

4. Experimental Result

Before diving into the evaluation, I want to highlight that this assessment is inherently subjective. We could have employed alternative methods like Accuracy, BLEU, F1 Score, or Perplexity. However, we chose human evaluation to make the results more relatable and understandable for the reader.

We will be evaluating responses based on three key criteria:

  • Fluency – Is the response grammatically correct and fluent?
  • Relevance – Does the response address the question or request in the post?
  • Helpfulness – Does the response provide subtly information about our company?
  • Compliance – Does the response satisfy the requirements of the prompt?

Each sentence will be scored from 1 to 5 for each of these criteria, with the final score being an average over 10 sentences.

Fluency Relevance Helpfulness Compliance
GPT-4o Model5.05.03.85.0
Llama 3-70B Model5.03.93.25.0
Gemini 1.5 Pro Model5.04.44.05.0
Claude 3.5 Model5.05.03.35.0
Qwen 2.5 -72B Model5.05.03.15.0

Fluency: All models scored perfectly (5.0), showing that the state of generative AI in 2024 has reached a high standard in producing grammatically correct, fluent text across languages. This is largely due to large-scale pre-training on diverse multilingual datasets.

Relevance: GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, and Qwen 2.5 excel in consistently addressing the context of the prompts with highly relevant answers. Gemini 1.5 also performs well but slightly trails in this area. Llama 3-70B, while strong, occasionally offers less specific answers, leading to a slightly lower relevance score.

Helpfulness: This is where the differences become more apparent. Gemini 1.5 Pro leads with a strong score (4.0) in incorporating subtle, company-related information into its responses, making it ideal for tasks involving brand promotion or delivering company-specific messaging. GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 also perform decently, but their focus is more on general information, which slightly reduces their effectiveness in offering promotional or context-specific content. Llama 3-70B and Qwen 2.5 score lower in this category, as their answers tend to be less aligned with subtle company-related integration.

Compliance: All models achieve perfect scores (5.0) for compliance, demonstrating that they consistently adhere to the requirements of the prompt. This shows the maturity of these models in understanding and meeting task expectations without deviating from the core instructions.

5. Conclusion

In summary, GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 stand out as highly reliable for general multilingual reasoning tasks, excelling in fluency and relevance. Gemini 1.5 Pro is the best choice when subtle company-related information needs to be integrated, offering a balance of fluency, relevance, and helpfulness. Qwen 2.5 and Llama 3-70B are strong performers, but their lower helpfulness scores make them better suited for tasks requiring broader, more neutral responses. Each model’s strengths can be leveraged depending on the specific requirements of a multilingual AI application.

Video Subtitle Generator: Build and Translate Subtitles

1. Introduction

The application of speech recognition and machine translation for automatic subtitling emerges as a promising solution. By providing real-time subtitles, viewers can understand and engage with the content in their preferred language. SwapBrain’s video subtitle generator provides a solution by enabling users to watch videos with auto-generated, translated subtitles.

In this article, we present a real-time video subtitle generator, implemented as a Chrome extension, to seamlessly translate and caption videos as you watch.

2. Architecture Design of an Advanced Video Subtitle Generator System

The system architecture is designed to ensure efficient and real-time processing of video content for automatic subtitling. The key component of the architecture is shown in the sequence diagram.

3. Experimental Results: Enhancing Accessibility with a Video Subtitle Generator

In this part, we want to clarify more about the models and transmission methods. A note here is that the transmission method to the server is still via API call (we will clarify this further in section 4), while transmission to the client will be a comparison between REST API and WebSocket.

3.1. Comparison of Approaches: REST API vs. WebSocket Method

3.1.1 Transmission Methods Between Client and Server

a. Rest API Method

I measured the time from when the text was displayed until the result was received and displayed in the browser. This experiment was performed 10 times and the results of each measurement are shown on the graph. The time measured at each time fluctuated, but the average was 741.2 milliseconds (ms). The graph illustrates the variation of response time over 10 measurements.

For example, if the chart is a line, we can see the changing trend of the response time, and if it is a column chart, each column will represent the response time of each measurement. An average of 741.2 ms was calculated by summing the times of the 10 measurements and dividing by 10, giving a number that represents the average response time.

Figure 2 – The Bar Chart Analysis of RestAPI Performance in a Video Subtitle Generator

In the chart above, you can see that the average time the RestAPI returns is around 741.2 milliseconds. The bar chart shows the model runtime (in milliseconds) measured over 10 different times. The runtimes varied significantly between measurements, with a minimum of 609 ms and a maximum of 889 ms. The majority of runtimes were around 700 ms, with a few exceptions exceeding 800 ms and one below 650 ms.

Measurements 5, 8, and 10 had significantly higher runtimes than the others, indicating variability in model performance under certain conditions. The highest runtime was observed at measurement 5 (889 ms), while the lowest runtime was at measurement 8 (609 ms). Measurement 10 also had a high runtime (837 ms). Most of the measurements (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7) were relatively consistent, ranging from 706 ms to 760 ms. 1

b. WebSocket Method

WebSocket is a communication protocol that provides full-duplex communication channels over a single TCP connection. Unlike REST APIs, which follow a request response model, WebSocket allows for persistent connections, enabling real-time data transfer between the client and the server. This makes WebSocket particularly useful for applications that require constant data updates, such as live chat applications, online gaming, or real-time trading platforms. WebSocket connections begin with a handshake process, after which data can be sent back and forth between the client and server without the overhead of opening new connections for each message.

Figure 3 – WebSocket Connection

In terms of transmission and reception time, WebSocket offers significantly lower latency. Because the connection remains open, data can be sent and received almost instantaneously, which is ideal for real-time applications. According to actual results, the average time after returning the text result until the text appears on the front end is 0.37 milliseconds.

Figure 4 – The Bar Chart Analysis of WebSocket Performance in a Video Subtitle Generator

c. Conclusion

The comparison between the REST API and WebSocket methods highlights a significant difference in the transmission and reception times. The REST API method, which involves establishing a new HTTP connection for each request, results in an average latency of 760 milliseconds. This delay can be detrimental to applications requiring real-time data updates, as it can hinder user experience by introducing noticeable lags.

On the other hand, the WebSocket method, which maintains a persistent connection, boasts an average latency of just 0.37 milliseconds. This near-instantaneous data transmission makes WebSocket highly suitable for applications that demand real time interaction and immediate data synchronization, such as live chat, online gaming, or real-time trading platforms.

Decision: WebSocket is the clear choice due to its low latency of 0.37 milliseconds. The persistent connection ensures that data is transmitted almost instantaneously, providing a smooth and responsive user experience.

3.1.2 Comparing Speech-to-Text Models: Vosk vs. Google Speech Recognition for a Video Subtitle Generator

Speech-to-text technology has advanced significantly, with various models offering different capabilities and performance metrics. This section compares two popular speech recognition models: Vosk and Google Speech Recognition. Both models convert spoken language into text but differ in design, performance, and use cases.

a. Google Speech Recognition Model

Cloud-Based Solution:

  • Google Speech Recognition operates as a cloud-based service. Users send audio data to Google servers, where powerful algorithms process the data and return the text results.
  • This cloud infrastructure allows for high accuracy due to access to vast amounts of training data and sophisticated machine learning models.

Continuous Updates:

  • Being a cloud-based service, Google can continuously update and improve the model without requiring users to update any software on their end.
  • This ensures the model stays current with the latest advancements in speech recognition technology

Latency:

The Scatter Graph Analysis of the Google Recognition Model in a Video Subtitle Generator

Figure 5 – The Scatter Graph Analysis of the Google Recognition Model in a Video Subtitle Generator

The scatter plot gives us an overview of the relationship between audio length (in seconds) and model runtime (in seconds) for Google Recognizer. Each data point on the plot represents a specific audio sample, with audio length on the x-axis and the time it took the model to process that audio on the y-axis. For short sounds (about 1 to 2 seconds), the data points are densely concentrated, indicating that the model processes these short audio segments quite quickly, usually under 2 seconds.

As the audio length increases (about 3 to 6 seconds), the distribution of running times becomes more diverse. Some audio files have similar lengths but have different processing times, indicating differences in the complexity of the audio content or other factors affecting processing time. In addition, the most suitable time to return results is about 1s to 3s, and processing by Google Recognition to recognize new words every 1s will have different results return times.

b. Vosk Model

Vosk is an open-source speech recognition toolkit that allows for local deployment. This means the model runs entirely on the user’s device without requiring internet connectivity. This design is advantageous for privacy-sensitive applications and scenarios where internet access is limited or unreliable. 2

Lightweight and Efficient:

  • Vosk is designed to be lightweight and efficient, capable of running on various devices, including those with limited computational resources.
  • It uses efficient neural network architectures optimized for local execution, making it suitable for embedded systems and edge devices.

Latency:

Vosk Model and WebSocket Transmission: Addressing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

Figure 6 – The Scatter Graph Analysis of the Vosk Model in a Video Subtitle Generator

Vosk’s local execution results in significantly lower latency. The average time for transcription 1 audio equivalent 1 second is around 0.15 seconds.

c. Conclusion

Latency and Response Time:

  • Google Speech Recognition has an average latency of 1.5 seconds due to the cloud communication overhead. The SpeechRecognition documentation recommends using a duration no less than 0.5 seconds. In some cases, you may find that durations longer than the default of one second generate better results. This may be acceptable for many applications but can be a drawback for real-time use cases.
  • Vosk, with its local processing, offers a much lower latency of 0.25 seconds, providing near-instantaneous results suitable for real-time applications.

Running Time vs. Audio Length:

  • The provided graphs illustrate the model running time versus audio length for both Google Speech Recognition and Vosk.
  • Google Speech Recognition’s running time increases significantly with longer audio lengths, reflecting the cloud processing overhead.
  • Vosk demonstrates a more consistent running time, with much lower variability, due to local execution.

Decision: Vosk is preferable for applications needing real-time performance, privacy, and offline capabilities. The significantly lower latency of Vosk (0.25 seconds) compared to Google Speech Recognition (1.5 seconds) highlights its advantage in real-time applications.

3.2 The combination of Vosk Model and WebSocket Transmission

3.2.1 Latency

Figure 7 – Addressing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

Given that all delays are within 1.3 to 1.5 seconds, they are considered acceptable and should not significantly impact the viewing experience.

3.3 The combination of Google Recognition and RestAPI Transmission

3.3.1. Latency

Google Recognition and REST API Transmission: Addressing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

Figure 8 – Addressing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

The average latency is 3.77, this is quite a large latency, so it greatly affects the user experience. This cloud-based service provides highly accurate transcription but can suffer from higher latency due to network transmission times. It generally takes a few hundred milliseconds to process the speech and return the transcription.

4. Optimization of a Video Subtitle Generator Using Python and WebSocket

Based on the above experiments, we can clearly demonstrate that REST API is not suitable for real-time translation. Therefore, in the optimization step, we need to switch the transmission method to the server to WebSocket. Although the optimization process is not yet complete, we can prove that transmitting the audio signal to the server via WebSocket significantly reduces latency. This is evidenced by developing a simple real-time translation recording application, and its translation time is illustrated in the following chart:

Reducing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

Figure 9 – Reducing Latency Between Audio and Subtitles in a Video Subtitle Generator

Clearly, the latency is extremely low, averaging only around 0.2 seconds, which is quite an impressive figure for real-time automatic translation.

5. Conclusion

In conclusion, the combination of the Vosk speech recognition model with WebSocket transmission proves to be the optimal solution for real-time automatic subtitling. WebSocket’s low latency ensures near-instantaneous data transfer, while Vosk’s local processing provides quick and accurate transcription. This setup effectively addresses the challenges of language barriers in global media consumption, enhancing user experience with reliable and timely subtitles.

3 Things about Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese

For many Chinese learners, they usually start with simplified Chinese because it offers many advantages for acquiring vocabulary more easily. However, you may not know that simplified Chinese evolved from traditional Chinese, and there are many interesting historical contexts between the two. This article will introduce readers to more information about simplified and traditional Chinese.

1. The historical background of Simplified and Traditional Chinese

The historical background of Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese characters stems from the evolution of Chinese characters’ writing and the historical development of different regions. In ancient times, Chinese characters evolved from pictograms and ideograms, gradually developing into the forms seen today over time. With the changes in Chinese history, there emerged some degree of variation in the use of characters in different regions, leading to the formation of two different writing forms: Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters.

simplified and traditional Chinese

Traditional Chinese characters originated primarily from the writing traditions of ancient China, maintaining relatively consistent forms in mainland China and other regions over time. The writing of Traditional characters is more complex, preserving the traditional style and aesthetic beauty of ancient Chinese characters, playing an important role in Chinese writing.

On the other hand, Simplified Chinese characters emerged during the Chinese character simplification movement in the early 20th century on the mainland. This movement aimed to improve writing efficiency and literacy rates by simplifying character forms. To achieve this goal, the government implemented a series of Chinese character simplification schemes. These simplification schemes were implemented in 1956 and 1964, simplifying some characters and forming the initial style of Simplified characters. The writing form of Simplified characters is relatively simple and more suitable for mass printing and writing, thus being widely used in mainland China.

2. The current basic differences between the two characters

Simplified Chinese CharactersTraditional Chinese Characters
Fewer strokesMore strokes
Simplified formsMore complex forms
Mainland China, Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.)Primarily used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and some Chinese communities

Stroke Simplification vs. More Strokes:

Simplified Chinese characters are characterized by stroke simplification, aiming to enhance writing speed and simplify character forms. For instance, the word “电话” (telephone) in Simplified Chinese characters is written as “电话” where the upper part of the character “電” (electricity) is simplified to “电,” reducing the upper part. In contrast, Traditional Chinese characters retain more strokes, resulting in more complex strokes.

Character Simplification vs. More Complex Forms:

Simplified Chinese characters undergo simplification, resulting in shorter and simpler forms. For instance, “醫院” (hospital) becomes “医院,” whereas “醫” (medicine) is simplified to “医.” In contrast, Traditional Chinese characters maintain more complex forms.

Widely Used Regions vs. Limited Usage Regions:

Simplified Chinese characters are predominantly used in mainland China for various purposes such as education, official documents, and media. Official documents, academic papers, textbooks, etc., in mainland China are typically written in Simplified Chinese characters. On the other hand, Traditional Chinese characters are mainly used in regions like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, etc., and find extensive usage in traditional cultural works, religious texts, publications, etc.

3. The Advantages of Simplified Chinese for Beginners

Simplified Chinese characters offer several noticeable advantages for foreigners who are beginners in learning Chinese, primarily evident in the threshold for character recognition and writing proficiency. The threshold for recognizing Simplified characters is relatively lower, making it easier for foreign beginners to grasp. Due to the fewer strokes in Simplified characters, beginners can quickly acquire basic writing skills and understand the character structures. For example, the Simplified character “医院” (hospital) is written as “醫院” in Traditional characters, with “医” simplified compared to “醫,” making it easier for beginners to recognize and write. These characteristics help enhance beginners’ interest and efficiency in learning Chinese.

Simplified characters are accompanied by a phonetic system known as Pinyin, which is based on the Latin alphabet and accurately reflects Chinese pronunciation, for example 医院 (Yīyuàn). For beginners, learning Chinese through Pinyin helps them pronounce accurately and reduces the likelihood of pronunciation errors. The alphabet and pronunciation rules of Pinyin are relatively simple and clear, allowing beginners to quickly grasp basic phonetic knowledge and start writing and reading Chinese using Pinyin.

BREAKING NEWS: Why is Netflix not releasing new Chinese movies?

Craving new Chinese movies, but Netflix seems to be missing out? Worry not! This article explores the reasons behind the limited selection and introduces you to iQIYI, a treasure trove of Chinese content. But the fun doesn’t stop there! We’ll also unveil PinyinTube, a powerful tool that turns iQIYI into a language learning wonderland. Get ready to unlock captivating movies, master Mandarin pronunciation, and embark on a thrilling journey towards fluency!

1. No new Chinese movies on Netflix recently?

There are two main reasons why Netflix isn’t releasing new Chinese movies lately:

1. Regulatory hurdles: The Chinese government imposes strict censorship on all media, including movies. This can make it difficult for foreign streaming platforms like Netflix to acquire licenses for new Chinese movies. The review process can be time-consuming and unpredictable, making it a less reliable source compared to platforms established within China.

2. Distribution partnerships: Netflix entered the Chinese market in 2017 through a licensing deal with iQIYI, where iQIYI would stream Netflix content in China and Netflix would have access to a selection of iQIYI content internationally. However, this deal expired in 2020 and wasn’t renewed. This means Netflix doesn’t have direct access to new Chinese releases through partnerships.

2. How iQIYI can help new language learners?

iQIYI is a popular Chinese subscription video on-demand platform, similar to Netflix or Hulu. It is a major streaming service in China, owned by Baidu. It offers a wide variety of movies, TV shows (including popular Asian dramas like Korean, Chinese, and Thai), anime, documentaries, and originals produced by iQIYI itself. Last but not least, the platform is available in seven languages: English, simplified and traditional Chinese, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Spanish!

Here’s why iQIYI could be a great substitute for finding new Chinese movies:

1. Local expertise: As a Chinese platform, iQIYI operates within the regulatory framework and has established relationships with Chinese studios and distributors, giving them easier access to new releases.

2. Extensive library: iQIYI boasts a vast library of Chinese movies and TV shows, including both recent releases and classics. They also invest heavily in producing their own original content.

3. Cultural understanding: iQIYI caters specifically to Chinese audiences, with content and features tailored to their preferences and cultural context.

However, there are also some key differences to consider:

1. Language barrier: The majority of iQIYI’s content is in Mandarin Chinese with limited subtitles in other languages.

2. Geo-restrictions: iQIYI is primarily available within China, with content library and features varying depending on the region. Accessing it outside China might require additional steps.

3. Free vs. subscription: iQIYI offers both a free tier with limited content and a paid subscription for full access.

Ultimately, whether iQIYI is a “great substitute” for Netflix depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you’re specifically looking for new Chinese movies and are comfortable with the language barrier and potential regional limitations, iQIYI could be a valuable resource. But if you prefer a wider variety of international content and accessibility in different languages, other streaming platforms might be a better fit.

3. How PinyinTube can assist Chinese learners on iQIYI?

Learning a language is more than just grammar and vocabulary. PinyinTube on iQIYI lets you experience the cultural nuances embedded in movies and TV shows, enriching your understanding beyond the textbook. PinyinTube excels with Chinese content, and iQIYI’s vast library is a treasure trove for language learners. From popular dramas to classic films, you’ll find engaging content that aligns with your interests and learning goals.

PinyinTube is indeed available for iQIYI in its free version, making it an even more compelling tool for Mandarin learners. While the free version offers PinyinTube’s core features, the premium upgrade unlocks voice recording and compatibility with more platforms. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Pinyin and character display: PinyinTube overlays the spoken dialogue with pinyin characters, helping you visually connect sounds with written forms. This can be incredibly helpful for beginners unfamiliar with Chinese characters.

2. Dual subtitles: PinyinTube allows displaying a second subtitle in your native language alongside the Chinese subtitles. This provides context and understanding while still exposing you to the original audio.

3. Sentence-by-sentence playback: Struggling to catch a phrase? PinyinTube lets you rewind sentence-by-sentence, allowing you to replay and practice specific sections at your own pace.

4. Voice recording (premium): If you subscribe to PinyinTube’s premium version, you can record yourself speaking the lines and compare your pronunciation to the actor’s voice. This active practice can significantly boost your speaking skills.

5. Focus on Chinese content: While PinyinTube also works with other platforms, its focus on Chinese content like iQIYI makes it a great companion for language learners specifically interested in Mandarin.

Remember, consistency is key! Regular practice with PinyinTube and iQIYI can significantly improve your Mandarin listening comprehension, pronunciation, and overall fluency. Example: In the suspenseful thriller Bajocero” (Below Zero), a character declares, “No podemos dejarlos atrás.” (We can’t leave them behind.) 1. Embrace the Soundtrack: Mastering Melodies, Not Monotones

Spanish pronunciation can be a trip, with those rolling Rs and tricky vowels. Subtitles are your guide, but don’t just read – listen! Immerse yourself in the musicality of spoken Spanish. Pause, repeat after the characters, and pay attention to intonation. Think of it as singing along to a catchy Spanish tune!

Example: Let’s dive into the Oscar-nominated “Madres Paralelas” (Parallel Mothers). In a poignant scene, Penélope Cruz‘s character cries out, “Mi bebé no está!” (My baby isn’t here!). Notice the soft “be” in “bebé” and the rising inflection at the end, conveying emotional urgency. Repeat the phrase, feeling the rhythm and tone, and you’ll nail it just like Penélope!
